On May 15, students from CICS Longwood and CICS Lloyd Bond had an unforgettable experience as they welcomed the National Basketball Athletic Equipment Managers Association (NBAEMA) to their campuses once more. Scholars from 6th grade through high school seniors connected with equipment managers from teams across the country—including the Chicago Bulls, who handed out swag like shirts and hats!—gaining powerful exposure to careers in sports beyond playing or coaching.
At CICS Longwood, the day began with excitement on the court as middle and high school students joined NBA equipment managers for basketball drills and games. Following the action, students gathered in the auditorium for a panel-style conversation led by emcee for the day, LWHS senior Brice. Equipment managers shared about their personal journeys, day-to-day responsibilities, and advice for students considering careers in athletics or operations.
Students asked thoughtful and curious questions—ranging from how constant travel affects family life, to how women are represented in the field, and how equipment managers stay mentally focused on tough days. The dialogue continued after the panel, with equipment managers mingling with students and building meaningful one-on-one connections. The visit built on last year’s generous donations, including new weight room equipment and $20,000! Huge thanks to Coach Keys for championing this experience and rallying the student body!
While Longwood’s event focused on mentorship and career exploration, CICS Lloyd Bond held a celebration as students gathered in the gym to unveil their newly refinished court, complete with a vibrant, freshly painted mascot at center court—donated by the NBAEMA!
The energy was high as students welcomed equipment managers with cheers and a special viewing of Mr. Glover’s original music video, “Beautiful Day.” Students heard motivational messages and learned about how they might turn their passion for sports into meaningful careers behind the scenes. Students asked about what happens when gear breaks mid-game, what it’s like to work with NBA players, and how they got their start in the field, before joining the NBAEMA on the floor for drills and some 1:1.
Everyone enjoyed a performance by the CICS Lloyd Bond dance team, and an impromptu dance-off really fueled the joy, connection, and laughter!
We’re so grateful to Peace Players for the connection, the NBAEMA, the teams at CICS Longwood and Lloyd Bond, and our Distinctive Schools community for making this event possible. Through dynamic partnerships like this, our students are inspired to see the possibilities ahead—and take steps toward turning their passions into purpose.
